URS, Unie van Redding en Sleepdienst SA in full, is a large towing and salvage company operating out of all port facilities in the Dutch-Belgian basin of Escaut. Founded in 1980, URS operates one of the most modern and efficient fleets and offers a complete range of services. Its top-quality equipment is vital to ensure a safe, reliable and high-quality service.
URS' strengths are its maritime, salvage and technical maintenance departments as well as its workshop. Its experienced, well-trained staff, who provide excellent customer service, ensure that it retains the knowledge and know-how required by today's navigation industry.
Aside from its traditional towing and salvage role, URS has extended its activities right along the Escaut. From the outset, it has participated in the development of oil fields in the North Sea. Since it was founded, URS has retained its position as the main freight port operator.
Today, URS is the Belgian branch of the company Smit and manages the commercial and operational activities of the tug boat fleet for the Belgian and Dutch maritime ports.
In addition, URS is the Ship Manager for offshore vessels, diving support and the ocean-going tug boats in the European fleet. The Antwerp unit manages and ensures the maintenance of a fleet of 75 ships and boats.
Smit is a towing and salvage company operating across all five continents. It is part of the Boskalis group, listed on the stock exchange, which operates in the marine dredging sector. The group has 1100 buildings and 14,000 employees.
We met Patrick Van Drom, Senior Human Resources Advisor for URS. He is responsible for all staff, comprising some 600 workers, 69 of whom are employees.
